As the fall season approaches, there are a few things that should be done to prepare your home. Here are four things to do now in order to make sure your home is ready for the Autumn days that are ahead.
Gutters and Downspouts
Autumn is synonymous with beautiful foliage falling from the trees. Over the summer months, debris may have accumulated in your gutters. To prepare your home for the leaves that will inevitably fall onto your roof and in your gutters, these areas should be checked and cleaned of any debris. Having a clear gutter system is also important because it keeps water from accumulating on the roof, which could result in water damage.
Walk around the exterior of your home and inspect your garden and landscaping. If there are any unhealthy plants, it is time to pull or cut them down. This time of year mulching is a great thing to do before cold weather strikes because it will keep the base of the plants warmer and healthier. If there are any lingering landscaping tasks on your summer “to-do” list, now is the time to conquer them.
Windows and Doors
Go around the home and check windows and doors for cracks, gaps, or damage. Fix any damage by caulking or checking with a professional to prevent more damage. Doing this will help keep warm air in the home, and cool air out. A quick tip to help lower you heating and electric bill is the keep the windows of your home clean, letting more light into the home to warm the air.
In the fall, the days get shorter and more things have to be done with the sun down. To brighten the exterior of your home and up your curb appeal, incorporate lighting into your landscaping. Light up walkways with small solar lights and think about adding more dramatic lighting to light up the exterior of your home.
