Despite the mild weather we have had lately, winter is quickly approaching. Having maintenance issues during the winter can result in uncomfortable repairs in the cold, delayed holiday baking, and much more! As we brace ourselves for the cold and snowy days that are ahead, here are some tips to ensure your home is ready.
Check For Drafts
Take a walk around the perimeter of the interior of your home. Check if you feel any air coming into your home through any cracks. Especially around windows and doors to ensure that everything is sealed properly. This way you will make sure you are keeping the heat inside, and the cold outside.
Program Thermostats
This is also a great way to save money on your electric bill. Program your thermostat to be on when people are home, and at a lighter setting when the home is vacant (this might be during work/school hours).
Clean Gutters
Throughout the year various bits of debris has probably accumulated in your gutters. These need to be cleaned out before the winter weather hits, consider hiring a professional if you do not feel comfortable doing this yourself. This is an important thing to have done because if the gutters become clogged it could cause drainage issues when snow and ice cannot drain out of the gutters on warmer days.
Check Trees
If there are any trees that look unhealthy, you might want to consider having them cut down before the winter hits. This will eliminate problems that might arise if there is a winter storm and the tree cannot handle the snow or ice being piled onto it.
Make Sure You Have Emergency Supplies
Have emergency supplies such as flashlights, ready-to-eat foods, water bottles, first aid supplies, batteries, and other necessities in an easily accessible place. Check these products periodically to make sure batteries still work and food has not expired. These are all good things to have on hand in case of power outages and natural disasters.
